Round 2 of the Up and Running Winter Walking League took place in chilly conditions around the Andreas village circuit on Sunday 26th November 2017.
The 10km was set off on handicap and resulted in a win for Michelle Turner, making a welcome return to racing after a lengthy absence. Stewart Jones sliced off 5 minutes from his first round time to get under the hour for second on handicap, while Voirrey Earnshaw-Cain and Chrissie Lewis removed 4 minutes from their round 1 performances and were just 5 seconds apart for 3rd and 4th position respectively. Ray Beattie also had a sizeable 3 minute improvement to take 5th and Tony Edwards was back on song and under the hour again for 6th on handicap. Fastest 10km walker on the day was Gianni Epifani with a personal best of 48.24. Dale Farquhar was second fastest with a seasons best of 52.00 while James Quirk was 3rd fastest with a lifetime best of 55.27. Fastest female was Michelle Turner with 56.38 from Bernie Ball 61.11 and not to be outdone by husband Dale, Jayne Farquhar was third fastest lady with 61.37 personal best.
The 5km resulted in a clear win on handicap from Lalaghe Earnshaw-Cain, who removed well over 2 minutes from her season opener. Sally Rothwell-Caley in 2nd and Louise Cowell in 3rd also took around a minute and ½ from their times and personal bests for all three ladies. Quickest walker in the 5km was Hannah Hunter, improving on her time from round 1 by 45 seconds to record 25.42. Second fastest was junior Alice Bellando who pretty much matched her time from round 1 with 30.33. Sharon Cain was third fastest and very close to her best with 31.41
The juniors raced well, with some fine techniques and close racing. Abbie Edwards continues to knock lumps of her personal best with 18.30 to take the win from Keira Heavey and Mia Dunwell who finished just 10 seconds apart in 20.33 and 20.43 all three girls are improving rapidly and walking really well.
In the 2km Daniel Bassett dipped inside 14 minutes for the win and Dominic Dunwell took over 30 seconds off his time from round 1 for 2nd place. The only girl in the 2km, Alex Nicoll was 3rd. In the 1km Conor Basset took the win from the diminutive Aalin Heavey who walked a very stylish race for one so young, both making improvements on their times from round 1.
Thanks, as ever to all those who helped on the day with judging, recording, timekeeping and marshalling etc. Also thanks to Andreas village commissioners for the use of the village hall.
The next round is at Ramsey Rugby Club on Sunday 17th December with signing on from 9.15 – 9.45 am for a 10.am start. There will also be small buffet after racing at this event and we hold a raffle, with proceeds to the junior travel fund at this league event and a small wrapped gift or donations for this are always welcome.
